Hibiscus is a passionate, women-centered organisation, having delivered high impact advocacy and advice services for 35 years to those at the intersection of the criminal justice and immigration systems. As an organisation, we have distinct expertise in working with Black, minoritised, and migrant women in prison and in the community, and with detainees from all genders in immigration removals centres. We create impact through the delivery of a holistic, trauma-informed, and gender-responsive intervention model across four specialist service areas: prisons, international resettlement, community resettlement, and anti-trafficking.
We are now recruiting for a talented Head of Policy and Public Affairs to shape their policy, advocacy and communications strategy. This is an exciting opportunity to support those with lived experience to make their voices heard, to raise awareness about what is happening to them, and to bring about change.
As an organisation working on racial and gender justice and migrants’ rights Hibiscus is particularly keen to attract talent from Black and minoritised communities and those with lived experience of immigration restrictions, the criminal justice systems, or gender-based violence. Though this post is restricted to women only as a genuine occupational requirement under Schedule 9 paragraph 1, Equality Act 2010. Hibiscus adopts anti-racist; anti-oppression, and feminist principles and believes in the importance of nurturing a diverse team who can embody these principles. Currently, 67% of Hibiscus’ staff and 50% of its Board are from minoritised groups.
This newly created role will provide strategic leadership in developing and delivering Hibiscus’ key influencing and media priorities. The post holder will lead on policy work for the organisation, looking at how they convert the work Hibiscus does to the wider world and how they engage and talk about the issues. This will include providing expert external engagement analysis and advice across multiple functions: policy, advocacy, campaigns, media, research, and government relations. The post holder will also be responsible for leading and coordinating communications and media work in response to external developments which impact our work. As part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Head of Policy and Public Affairs will play a key role in shaping the organisation’s strategy and development.
The successful candidate will have significant experience working in policy, advocacy, and/or campaigning, with a track record of developing and implementing successful communications plans. The candidate will have experience of engaging with stakeholders at all levels including policy makers and politicians. They will also have an understanding of the policy landscape of one of more of Hibiscus’ key work areas – criminal justice, immigration and migrants’ rights, racial justice, and/or gender-based violence/gender justice.
